I love your gouache flowers πŸ’! I have same set as you show in the picture, need to use it for quick paintings like you do! Thanks so much!

Thank you Laura!!

So true Michael! I was so good at sketching every day while we were away in Italy, with nothing else to distract me. Life has a habit of encroaching on art time if you don't make a specific time for it. Love all your tips here and the gorgeous sketches as always πŸ’š

yes! So true!

Thank you, Michael! I love this idea of having a few sketching supplies in a little basket nearby and ready to go. I’m going to set some up today. I was wondering if you ever sketch or paint on Procreate? I took a class by Anne Ward on painting in Procreate, and it has really helped me be more creative. I find that I’m more motivated to paint the flowers on my deck or even at a coffee shop when I don’t have to bring all my supplies outside and especially in public because I always feel shy about that. Procreate is basically a little art studio on your iPad.

Oh, I love Anne!!! She’s so kind. I don't mind Procreate. (I actually prefer ArtRage.) But it’s just not something I tend to reach for. I’m on a screen way too much so I want ways to get away from them. But I’ve seen folks do amazing work with them. Do you know teddiparkerart on Instagram? She does amazing work with ArtRage.

Yes, I love her art! I sometimes use the Sketchbook app but I’ve never heard of ArtRage so I will check it out! Thanks again for sharing!

Love this idea so much and I think I'll let the whole family know they're welcome to paint too.

Michael- thank you for making art seem so accessible to a true novice. It is like you can see inside my brain πŸ˜‚πŸ™

Love the colors you chose. I just took a class in the Neo Crayons. Looks like fun!

A class!? What a great idea! I’m sure that was so helpful.

Michael, your posts are the ones I look forward to more than any others. I had no idea there were daily Substack Notes for subscribers. Should I get a notification or am I supposed to know to go there? Ha! I'm a little slow on all the substack stuff. I love your inspiration for artists. I've been following you for years to see all your home decorating inspiration and great recipes, but the art really touches my soul. I am going to copy your setup. I have everything I need, except the pen. But I have pens, just not ink variety. I may decide to get one of those because they do impart a certian feel to the work. Thank you!!

It can be confusing. So, you can subscribe to Paint and Paper with an email address. That is like a blog here on Substack. Long form articles. You’ll get an email every time I post an article.

https://paintandpaper.substack.com

Substack also has a feed. More like social media. It’s where I post quick little things. A picture, a link, what I’m working on. Quick. Short. You don’t get emails for this. It’s kind of something you need to scroll and check. Like social media.

You are so right! Since I started painting on my kitchen table (I use a corner of it), every morning I sit down with my coffee and start painting. My sketchbook is left open on a blank page, all is set to start: paintbrush, small palette with 2-3 colours, a jar with clean water. It works!

Sketching with a pen changed my world. No more erasing; my sketching becomes looser and more free. I didn’t reach for perfection as much as gesture and feel of the subject. Watercolor is the icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing your idea and experience!
